DAVID A. NELSON
– PRINCIPAL CONSULTANT
David A. Nelson, P.E., INCE Bd. Cert., is
an independent acoustical consultant with over 20 years of experience in
acoustics. His past experience includes directing an accredited acoustics
laboratory and acoustical consulting. He currently provides a broad range
of consulting services, including noise and vibration control for buildings and
industrial plants, low-noise product design, sound quality, integrated
laboratory data acquisition and control systems, acoustical test facility
design,
and customized training courses.
EDUCATION
- M.S.E., Engineering Acoustics, The University of
Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, 1984
- B.S., Department of Mechanical Engineering,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA, 1981, with special
emphasis in Acoustics
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES IN CONSULTING
- Noise
and Vibration Control: source identification and
evaluation, quantifying propagation of sound in the environment, estimating the
impact of noise at the receiving point, designing and evaluating noise control
treatments, developing comprehensive noise control action plans and specific
recommendations, identifying mechanisms of noise generation and recommending
alternative equipment operational parameters for reduced noise without loss of
functionality.
- Acoustics:
selection of appropriate
criteria, evaluation of room surface treatments, evaluate balance and
diffusion of sound
- Test
Facility Design: sound and vibration isolation, integrated
control and data acquisition systems, test procedures and standards, chamber
qualification, laboratory accreditation and quality issues.
- Sound
Quality: development of in-house SQ plan, calibrated
recording systems, identification of appropriate listening evaluation
methods, computation of sound quality metrics, modeling of listener
preferences, engineering
for desired spectral balance, digital signal processing for "virtual sound quality"
stimuli.
- Acoustical
Measurement and Analysis: customized data acquisition and analysis
systems, noise reduction, transmission
loss, sound absorption, sound power and sound intensity, impedance tube
testing, test chamber qualification, impulse response, vibration,
microvibration, in
laboratory or field.
- Instruction
in Acoustics and Noise Control: customized training
courses in acoustics, noise control and vibration control. Mr. Nelson is
known for the ability to teach in plain terms.
